چکیده

We introduce a simple variational principle for coherent material vortices in twodimensional turbulence. Vortex boundaries are sought as closed stationary curves of the averaged Lagrangian strain. Solutions to this problem turn out to be mathematically equivalent to photon spheres around black holes in cosmology. The fluidic photon spheres satisfy explicit differential equations whose outermost limit cycles are optimal Lagrangian vortex boundaries. As an application, we uncover super-coherent material eddies in the South Atlantic, which yield specific Lagrangian transport estimates for Agulhas rings.

Vortex statistics from Eulerian and Lagrangian time series.

Coherent vortices are an important component of the dynamics of geophysical turbulence, but direct estimates of the properties of the vortex population from measured data is usually difficult. Motivated by this problem, we propose a new method for determining the statistical properties of coherent vortices in two-dimensional turbulence based on a small number of Lagrangian and Eulerian time ser...

Inverse energy cascade and emergence of large coherent vortices in turbulence driven by Faraday waves.

We report the generation of large coherent vortices via inverse energy cascade in Faraday wave driven turbulence. The motion of floaters in the Faraday waves is three dimensional, but its horizontal velocity fluctuations show unexpected similarity with two-dimensional turbulence. The inverse cascade is detected by measuring frequency spectra of the Lagrangian velocity, and it is confirmed by co...

Dispersion and mixing in quasigeostrophic turbulence.

The dynamics of passive Lagrangian tracers in three-dimensional quasigeostrophic turbulence is studied numerically and compared with the behavior of two-dimensional barotropic turbulence. Despite the different Eulerian properties of the two flows, the Lagrangian dynamics of passively advected tracers in three-dimensional quasigeostrophic turbulence is very similar to that of barotropic turbulen...

Dynamics of wind-forced coherent anticyclones in open ocean

1 We numerically study the dynamics of coherent anticyclonic eddies in the ocean interior. For 2 the hydrostatic, rotating, stably-stratified turbulence we use a high-resolution, Primitive3 Equation model forced by small-scale winds in a idealized configuration. Many properties 4 of the horizontal motions are found to be similar to those of two-dimensional and quasi5 geostrophic turbulence. Maj...

Spectral-clustering approach to Lagrangian vortex detection.

One of the ubiquitous features of real-life turbulent flows is the existence and persistence of coherent vortices. Here we show that such coherent vortices can be extracted as clusters of Lagrangian trajectories. We carry out the clustering on a weighted graph, with the weights measuring pairwise distances of fluid trajectories in the extended phase space of positions and time. We then extract ...
